Why is self-esteem important?

Self-esteem is important because it influences how much you:

  • Like and value yourself as a person
  • Believe in yourself and the things you can do
  • Stand up for yourself when under pressure
  • Are willing to try new or difficult things
  • Move on from mistakes without blaming yourself unfairly
  • Believe you matter and are good enough
  • Believe you deserve happiness
  • Accept your weaknesses
  • Feel vulnerable
  • Fear to be rejected
  • Recognize your needs

Your self-image can also be influenced from the outside, for example when others praise or criticize you.

How can you improve your self-esteem?

Many people know times when they are unhappy with themselves. This can happen, for example, when you have a lot to deal with or are feeling stressed. Then thoughts like “I can’t do this” or “I’m not good enough” can arise.
The good news: Your self-esteem can change and you can actively improve it! With a bit of training, you can reduce negative thoughts and replace them with a more positive image of yourself.
