Finding your (inner) strengths

Life can be challenging sometimes, for example in school, before exams, within the family, in friendships, in relationships, when thinking about the future,… . We then often focus on problems and the negative impact they have on us and in doing so, we forget about the features and strengths we have to help us to master the challenge.

So, in this section, you will learn more about possible (inner) strengths one can have and how to activate your own strengths.

Here you will find answers to the following questions:
  • What are (inner) strengths
  • How to activate and utilise your strengths and resources

What are (inner) strengths?

By strengths we mean everything you have within you or that you do that helps you to withstand pressure or stress and give you energy. In addition, other people can give us strength by supporting us.
It’s sometimes not that easy to know what you are good at and what your strengths are and it differs from person to person. That is why we would like to give you an inspiration of potential strengths and activities that could help you with your daily struggles:

How to activate and utilise your strengths

A simple way to activate your strengths is by doing something that gives you joy doing it. This can be listening to good music, dancing, singing, good memories, a book, a series… You can let your imagination run wild!
Another way for getting a strength booster is to remember moments when you had pleasant feelings, e.g. a party you had a good time at or when you couldn’t stop laughing with your friends. Or to remember, what you have already mastered successfully, like a presentation you were very excited about and that turned out great or a tricky conversation with your parents about more pocket money that you were nervous about (but now you’re getting more money…😉)
Sometimes, especially when we’re in a bad mood, it’s hard to see our own strengths or to see the things that give us joy. If you’re having troubles with that, it can help to ask other people that know you well (e.g. friends, parents, siblings) to tell you what they see in you. That can help finding things, we haven’t seen in ourselves before.
At the same time, being around people who like and support you (e.g. family, friendships, relationship, team mates, …) can help to get new energy and strength for the everyday struggles. With your loved ones you can do some fun things together, like going on small trips or on holidays.
Tip: If you want to do something creative, you can create a collage called “what gives me strength” to collect your strengths.
